Hotelicopter: it’s like a cruise, but through the air

March 30th, 2009

Though not quite as extravagant as checking into a space motel, booking a stay in the Hotelicopter is pretty stupendous. Hailed as the world’s first flying hotel, the Soviet-made Mil V-12 has been extended and completely renovated since being purchased in 2004, and starting this summer, it’ll host 18 decidedly affluent individuals on a fortnight long roundtrip jaunt that begins and ends in New York, stopping at Charleston, Freeport, Montego Bay, Santo Domingo, Nassau, Miami and Charlotte along the way. There’s also a California and European tour planned for July, and the ‘copter can even be rented out for what will undoubtedly be the zaniest episode of My Super Sweet 16 ever. There’s no word on how pricey this five-star flying hotel will be, but if you have to ask, you probably can’t even afford a walkthrough.

Update:
The further we look into this, the less realistic it seems. It looks like someone may have taken the covers off their April Fool’s hoax a few days early.

[Thanks, Kyle]

Due to popular demand (and infrastructure trouble), Microsoft has extended the availability of the Windows 7 beta through January 24 and removed the 2.5 million download cap. Huzzah!

Thank you for your enthusiasm, interest and willingness to beta test. It has been great to see the positive early reviews and feedback. As you know, this is a beta product. We are working hard to get Windows 7 ready and right.

Victorinox Presentation Pro floated by the Swiss army

January 9th, 2009

Victorinox — makers of the original Swiss Army knife — made its first trek to CES with this, its new Presentation Pro. Tucked away with insane precision are a removable 32GB USB drive with fingerprint authentication, laser pointer, and Bluetooth remote control for your Windows-only PC or laptop presentations. Yep, key ring and scissors too. It even features a blade to fight off your enemies and a file to scrape away any fingerprints after the deed is done. We went hands on with the device and were truly impressed with the build quality. Here’s the rub: it’ll cost you $330 when it ships in May. Did we say it had a laser?

Shure wants to bring microphones to your USB port

January 8th, 2009
Shure PG27USB, PG42USB and X2u

Whether you choose a direct USB microphone or you’re an audio-specialist XLR type, Shure has you covered on getting that audio routed to your computer’s USB port. The PG27USB and PG42USB are direct-to-USB condenser microphones with a cardiod pickup pattern — pick the $199 PG27USB for a flat response or the $249 PG42USB if vocals are your thing. Like we’ve seen from other devices, the $129 X2u will marry your favorite XLR-type mic to your USB port with zero-latency, phantom power and headphone monitoring. The Shure name is well-trusted in microphones, but check the full details after the break if you’re still not, um, sure.

Mad Catz rolls out new Saitek Aviator flight sticks for Xbox 360, PS3

January 8th, 2009

Flight sticks may not be quite as common as they were during the heyday of PC flight sims, but there’s still quite a few would-be Chuck Yeagers out there, and Mad Catz is doing its best to cater to them with its new pair of Saitek Aviator sticks for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. From the looks of it, these are mostly identical to the existing Aviator PC flight stick, with the notable exception of the requisite console-specific buttons, and a slightly spiffed-up appearance. As a bonus, each of these will also double as a PC joystick although, naturally, you won’t be able to swap ‘em between a 360 and a PS3. Look for both to hit all the usual shops later this month for $50 apiece.

Microsoft announces availability of Windows 7 Beta and Windows Live

January 8th, 2009

The wait is over, folks. Sir Steve Ballmer has announced the availability of Windows 7 Beta and Windows Live here at his CES keynote. The official word is this: “The beta version of Windows 7, Microsoft’s next-generation PC operating system, can be downloaded today by MSDN, TechBeta and TechNet customers. Consumers who want to test-drive the beta will be able to download it beginning January 9 at http://www.microsoft.com/windows7.” Moreover, Windows Live — described as “a free suite of communications and sharing applications that make it easy for people to communicate, share and keep their online lives in sync and in one place with one login — is now globally available. Oh, and did we mention that January 9th is this Friday? Huzzah!

RealView unveils three 3D desktop scanners

January 8th, 2009

We don’t see too many 3D scanners 'round these parts, so we'll be excited to hit RealView 3D's booth at CES and see what all the fuss is about. The RealView 360⁰ 3D Desktop Scanner is being billed as the world's first desktop scanner capable of capturing objects in their full 360⁰ topographic glory, suitable for scanning mugs, model space ships, D&D figurines, and whatever else fits on its base. There are three models available: RealView 360 3D (the plain ol' VGA scanner), RealView 360 3D HD (for that hi-def resolution you crave) and RealView 360 HD Commercial (for large format scans and kiosks). Beyond that, we'll just have to wait for CES 2009 to open its doors. Soon.

Washing machine hacked to tweet when the load’s done: @maytag, you listening?

January 3rd, 2009

We’re truthfully not sure what’s cooler: the fact that the above pictured washing machine tweets when it’s done, or the fact that the above pictured washing machine still works. We’re guessing that the geeks in the crowd would argue that it’s clearly the former, and for those interested in a little proof / explanation, you can head on past the break for a video demonstration. But just so you know, it’s highly unlikely that your Twittering washer will have any diehard followers.
